Creating a sustainable PBS

Posted October 23rd, 2015

Reform of the Australian Pharmaceuticals Benefit Scheme (PBS) is becoming more likely as drug costs continue to rise. While no decision has been forthcoming from the current health minister, Sussan Ley, there are several possibilities. Each option must be carefully weighed to determine the one most capable of providing the desired cost-savings and benefits.

Reform of the PBS may come down to one of these factors:

  • Price disclosure
  • Increased price reductions
  • Delisting obsolete medicines
  • Appropriate use of medicines
  • Biosimilars
  • Capping the PBS
